What are Outdoor Warning Sirens?
| You may remember the term
Civil Defense Sirens. They now have a more generic name: Outdoor
Warning Sirens or OWS. The OWS notify the general public while outdoors, in the shortest time possible.
This is especially important when people are not in contact with the
normal news media such as when they are at the park, the beach, in backyards,
parking lots or participating in other forms of outdoor recreation.
New technology adds speech to the sound capability, creating a system that utilizes
both the siren sound and spoken words.
Some of the potential safety hazards the OWS may be used for:
|
Severe Weather -
Tornado's
Thunderstorms
Hurricanes
Floods
Industrial Paging and Messages
In-Plant Emergencies |
Hazardous Material Spills -
Railroad
Highway
Waterway
Fire Calls
|
The OWS is only one component of a complete warning
system. Another component is indoor warning utilizing the Emergency Alert
System or EAS. |
